A Biography

The saga of a nobleman’s life is an illumination that guides the society towards the path of righteousness.

The life of reverend, and heavenly national sage Shree Davendra Swarup Brahmchari Ji Maharaj is like beacon of light that shall always guide the people towards the path of righteousness. His entire life was dedicated for the welfare of the society and the service of motherland. He persevered throughout his life to raise the spiritual level of the Indian society.

Shri Maharaj Ji was born on 28 February 1924 in a simple farmers family. His father name was, Late Shri Mohan Lal Kaushik and Mother name was Smt. Late Bhagwanti Devi. There were five brothers and one sister in the family.

Spiritual teacher was great Grammarian reverenced Shree Ganga Swarup Brahmchari Ji Maharaj. He was initiated into spirituality in January on the day of Basant Panchami in 1998 during Maha Khumb at Prayag. His fellow disciples were late sage Shree Narayan Swarup Ji Maharaj. Late Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj was learned in the study of Vedas and Vedantta, Yog Science, Scriptures, Smriti, Ramayan, Mahabharat and Geeta. He was thought by Gurudev Shri Ganga Swarup Brahmchari Ji Maharaj. Pandit Gunni Ram Ji Shastri, a renowned Vedanta philosopher, Pandit Maya Ram Ji, Pandit Hari Ram Ji, Pandit Balak Ram Saraswat, Swami Prabhas Bhikshu Ji

His association with sages and seers
Heavenly Shri Vibhishit Jagatguru Shankaryacharya, Shri Swami Hari Haranand Sarswati Ji, Swami Brahmanand Sarswati Ji, Swami Krishna Bodhashram Ji, Swami Prathas Bhikshu Ji, Shri Abhinav Sachidanand Tirath Ji were some of the sages and seers he interacted with and received spiritual contentment in their company.

Mission in Life
Protection and propagation of Sanskrit language and Indian culture was the guiding mantra of his mission. Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj worked relentlessly for propagation of Vedic tradition and knowledge of scriptures. He paid great reverence to sages, worked untiringly for the protection of cows. He believed that the guest was like a god and showed due courtesy to all people who visited his ashrams. Maharaj Ji believed that the progress of society could not be achieved without the progress of women kind. He worked for the upliftment of the women through establishing schools and colleges. He had great compassion for poor and destitute.

1- Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj contribution towards nation building
His contribution towards building a strong nation can be gauged by the numerous institutions he has established for social service, educational upliftment and medical purposes. Some of the institutions are as follows:

Shri Jai Ram Anan Chetra, Rishikesh : The Anan Chetra was founded by Adi Guru Shri Jai Ram Maharaj in 1891. Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj built a new portals of the Ashram and renovated the entire premises. He added spacious Hall for “Yagya” (havan) in Shri Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple. He built well furnished guest houses replete with all comforts, Homeopathic dispensary, satsang bhavan and set up a Sanskrit college in Rishikesh. He can be truly called a saint with a far sight.

Shri Jai Ram Ashram, Haridwar : Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj had the main entrance of the Ashram constructed, he added a Ved bhavan, five temples, spacious hall for “Yagya” and made a Shiv Ling for quartz (rock crystal) stone. He also decorated the temples with the idols depicting the sequence of events from epic Mahabharata. Some of the scene depicted are Bhism Pitamaha bed of arrows and donation of tooth by Karan. Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj also built Saptrishi temple and Dashoavataram temple built in Haridwar. He also made night shelter under the name of Navdurga. Thousands of graduates of Vidyapeeth are employed in these institutions and holding various offices of responsibility.

Shri Jai Ram Nivas, Haridwar : Guru Late Shri Narayan Swarup Bhramchari had built this in 2004. Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj had a new portal made and renovated the entire building. This Nivas provides free board and lodging to the pilgrims.

Shri Kasturi Ram Mahadeep Ashram, Haridwar : This Ashram was setup by Late Sant Narayan Swarup Ji Maharaj Brahmchari Ji. He was the fellow disciple of Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj. Shri Devendra Swarup Ji had the portal and renovation of the Ashram. He also setup Kasturi charitable trust in Narela in Delhi. A night shelter which offers free lodging to the the travelers and Shiv temple are some of the additions made to this Ashram by Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj.

Shri Ganga Swarup Ashram, Haridwar : Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj built a three storied Ashram at central Bhupatwala, Haridwar for the benefit of pilgrims. This Ashram is fully equipped with all modern amenities. In the vicinity of this Ashram Maharaj built a Panch Dev Mandir and Satsang Bhavan.

Shri Jai Brahmchari Ashram Delhi : This Ashram was setup by Shri Kutastha Ji Maharaj, a disciple of Shri Jai Ram Ji Maharaj. In 1990 Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj added up a school for Vedic studies, a training centre, a preaching hall and community centre.

Seth Navrang Rai Lohia Kanya Mahavidyalaya in Lohar Majra Kureshetra : On the request of Gram Panchayat Lohar Majra, Kurushetra, the well known industrialist house in 2001 Lohia donated 22 acres of land for building Girls College. Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj built a college, offering quality education at undergraduate level for girls.

2- Yagna Rites
For the welfare of society and progress of nation Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj performs 108 Bhagwat Parayan Yagna, 5 Gayatri Yagna, 7 Sahastra Maha Yagna, 3 Vishnu Maha Yagna, 5 Akhand Shatchandi Maha Yagna, 12 Maharudh Yagna, 11 Abhishekaatamak Atirudh Maha Yagna, lasting seventeen years, 1 Havanatamak Atirudh Maha Yagna. Since 1984 a Yagna for national prosperity, in Kurushetra is being performed daily.

3- Organisation of conventions and conferences : Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj numerous religious conventions which were attended by many saints. Some of them have been as follows.

Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj has listened to Shri Ram Katha being narrated by Shri Morari Bapu Ji 15 times

4- National awareness
Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj setup refugee camp at the time of India’s partition for the refugees migrating from Pakistani territory. During Indo – China war in 1962 and Indo-Pak war at 1965 Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj created public awareness and invoked feelings of patriotism. When Haryana was devastated by terrible flood Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj provided aid to the victims. The Earthquake that hit the hill areas of the present state of Uttarakhand in 1991 Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj offered aid and volunteers to help the affected peoples

5- Social Welfare
Worked as the President of Municipal Board in Rishikesh. His greatest contribution to the society was abolishing the in human practice of carrying of human excreta for disposal by the sweepers.

  • He solved many problems of the teachers.

  • Ensured efficient supply of milk to the people of Rishikesh

  • Raise the wages of the employees of Municipal Board in Rishkesh during his tenure as its president

  • Established educational institutions for higher education

  • Due to the falling of boulders into river Ganga there was a grave danger to Rishkesh due to the water level rising alarmingly Maharaj had the flow of Ganga diverted to save Rishikesh.

He made efforts to give the tradition of celebrating Geeta Jainti in Kurushetra, the status of national festival.

Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj worked untiringly in consultation with the Governor of Haryana to put the legendry place of Kurushetra on the world map.

6- Contribution to education

Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj established two Sanskrit colleges

  • One college for girls

  • One school

  • Three schools for vedic studies

7- Free Health services
Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj established the following hospitals at different places in the country:

  • Shri Jai Ram Homeopathic hospital in Rishikesh

  • Shri Jai Ram Hospital in Haridwar

  • Shri Jai Ram Eye and maternity hospital in Narwana

  • Shri Navarang Rai Lohia, Jai Ram hospital for women at Lohar Majra

  • Organized many medical camps which treated the patients free of cost.

8- Service for upliftment of poor
Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj worked continuously and dedicatedly for the upliftment of poor and downtrodden. He organized mass marriages for the girls of under privileged families in Rishikesh every year. This has benefited nearly 4000 families.

9- Service for the Pilgrims
During Kumbh Mela in Prayag, Kumbh Mela in Haridwar Suriya Grahan Mela in Kurushetra, Falgun Mela at Faral, in Kaithal Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj made arrangements for free board and lodging for thousands of pilgrims and also setup medical camps where free medicine and consultation was provided to the ailing people.

10- Arrangement for meals (Bhandara)
In all the Ashrams setup by Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj in Delhi, Haridwar, Kurushetra and Rishikesh free meals are offered to saints, pilgrims and the students everyday.

11- Service to cows
Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj had setup cows shelters in various places. Among them some are :

  • Shri Jai Ram Goshala, Sonepat

  • Shri Jai Ram Goshala, Berry, Jhajhar

  • Shri Jai Ram Adarsh Goshala, Punderi, Kaithal

12- Environment Protection
Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj visualized aforestation in Jai Ram Ashram farm at Gomaniwala, Rishikesh, Shri Jai Ram Girls college in Lohar Majra and Shri Kamekeshwar Mahadev temple in Kamoda.

Shri Devendra Swarup Ji Maharaj Bhramchari departed for his heavenly abode on 7 September 2004 at 8:25 A.M.
