The
history of Berry Goshala
is closely linked with that of
Shri Jai Ram Annanchetra
Rishikesh because both are a
century old and have been
established around the same
time. Maharaj Shri Jai Ram
Brahmchari Ji practiced a hard
penance in this village and
performed many Yagyas. He was
moved by the plight of the cows
and inspired the people to start
shelters for cows. But people
paid no heed to his request.
The water of all the wells in
the village had turned saline.
It is said that when Jai Ram
Maharaj drank this water it
turned sweet. Witnessing this
miracle the people fell at the
feet of Maharaj Ji and asked for
his forgiveness. Later on with
the cooperation of the villagers
one Panchayati Goshala was setup
in the village. Today there are
about 300 to 500 old and
diseased cows. A committee has
been setup to run and supervise
the working of the Goshala.
With the help of the Shri
Devendra Swarup Brahmchari
Maharaji many barracks have
been made here, a tube well has
also been sunk and to bring the
fodder for the cows, the Goshala
also purchased tractor trolley.
There is a good facility of
drinking water and properly
ventilated sheds for the cows.
His successor Shri Brahmswarup
Brahmchari Ji paid special
attention towards the Goshala.
He has been giving ideas for the
proper care of the cows and for
their medical treatment. It is
the result of his able and
inspiring guidance that many
rich people as far as from
Calcutta have been sending
donations for the maintenance of
the Goshala .
